Sarachai can't remember much of his former life, except that he was a loved and only child. He lived in a small village on the north-western coast of Palalangan. One day Pahanari soldiers arrived, claiming that the village was a hiding place for people from the resistance. Rather than interrogating people, they started killing all of them, just to make sure. Lying there bleeding to death, the little boy saw a strange tiger-looking creature skulk out from the shadows after the soldiers left. Enraged, seeing that the creature meant to loot the dead, he feebly tried to scare it away. Almost immediately, he collapsed due to loss of blood. He woke up an indeterminate time later, fully healed. The creature, a Harimau he was soon to learn, had saved him. The old one, Maskada by name, said that Sarachai showed strength of spirit, and decided to give him a chance. He trained with the Harimau for several years, learning wood lore and how to fight. Eventually, the old one passed away by old age. However, before he died, he decided to impart a final gift to Sarachai, the strength of the Harimau. He told Sarachai that he had proved himself worthy to carry his heritage on.

Sarachai remained in the old one's forest glade for a while, mourning him and contemplating what he had learned, what he had become. He felt a strong urge to journey east, sensing that something important lay in store for him there. He met several Harimau on the way, and befriended one, Chada. An older and more experienced Harimau, he did not fight him off as the other Harimau's did. Instead, the other Harimau shared his dislike towards the Kaliyatra, as they had invaded his territory, and hunted freely in the forest, without concern for the wildlife. As such, they shared a common goal, to harry and disturb the army any way they could. Sarachai continued eastward, promising to return when he had found what he was looking for.

Some time after, he come upon a Kaliyatra patrol. All the sense that the old one had taught him left, and he attacked them, thinking on nothing but vengeance. He stood no chance of course, and was quickly beaten. However, a group of Achariyans from the nearby Mount Atiya, where the Order of the Rising Tiger could be found, came upon the Scyllians as they were about to take Sarachai with them. Since he looked very much like Lord Tahamatan, the god that they worshipped, they saw it as a sign, and ambushed the patrol, taking Sarachai with them.

Sarachai was brought to the Nāshri Mountain Monastery and stayed there for several years, learning the way of the warrior-monks, and to control his feelings and inner demons. Eventually he became restless, again. He journeyed eastwards again, this time becoming ambushed by a group of Kaliyatra. They subdued him, thinking he would make a good slave, as he looks quite fearsome. They took him to the mine, where he is now.
